We spent the winter months in beautiful San Diego, CA hanging Christmas lights and picking up shifts bartending or serving whenever possible. A few months spending time with my brothers Joe and CJ and making a few dollars to enable us to get back on our bikes for another adventure. Ryan spent our last days in San Diego in his typical departure ritual of preparing the bikes for travel (finding boxes and packing material and breaking them down to their smallest capacity), going through all of our gear, and simply tying up all lose ends. I was lucky enough to have a few days work-free to soak up as much time as possible with my brothers. The last two weeks, we managed to kayak (and were lucky enough to see dolphins, sea lions and whales), camp in the desert, watch CJ's new band The Deadly Birds perform and sailed. A great way to end a two+ month stretch of hard work. I will miss my brothers so much as they are both such fantastic people and we all have a great time together. I am so lucky.
Tuesday, February 7, we arrived at the airport two hours early with our fingers crossed hoping there would not be any problems getting our bikes on board along with minimal questions. Our luck prevailed and thanks to Ryan and the woman working at Continental, I flew first class for one leg of the trip and it only cost an extra $9. I am scarred for life and will always want to sit first class now:-)
I'm sure you are wondering where we are heading? First stop, Southern Mexico. We flew into Puebla and have flexible plans for making our way to Panama City over the course of 3-4 months. Where we will go exactly, we have no idea. Just how we like it.
Thanks to Ryan's research, he found the highest rated hotel, Hotel Casareyna, on trip advisor for a ridiculously cheap rate in Puebla, one of the oldest cities in the Americas. Opting to fly into Puebla was easy because the flights were extremely cheap. Working with a small budget, we often choose the best deal. Spending a bit of time to filter out our options has helped us travel to this extent. We will stay here 3 nights and have spent our days thus far exploring the city on foot. Blocks and blocks of shops and restaurants fill the busy city while travelers and locals stroll and admire the architecture and tile work. Constant horns go off in the background as cars whiz in and out of lanes trying their hardest to squeeze through the yellow lights. Off in the distance you can see the enormous volcano Popocatepetl, almost reaching 18,000 feet, surrounded by smoke and clouds. A breathtaking site.
Tomorrow we will have to decide if we stay in another hotel in the city due to the rain setting in for the weekend, or rather simply go for it and hope to find shelter when needed. We are both extremely excited to be back on the bikes, exploring another part of the unknown world for us. We are so appreciative and thankful to be where we are. Now, where to go?
